Newcastle Central Train Station
Opened by Queen Victoria in 1850, Newcastle Train Station is one of the UK railways' best-kept secrets. A stunning station in a Grade One-listed building, it is a testament to Victorian architecture and design, with its curved train shed and outstanding ornamental features. Its renovation in 2014 only heightened its splendour.
While its heritage lies firmly in the past, today, the station places one foot firmly in the present. It’s a highly convenient station to travel through, with tons of amenities, useful shops and cafes, and a simple building to navigate that never gets too busy.
In 2000, workers restoring the station’s lounge uncovered long-forgotten Victorian wall tiles beneath layers of paint and concrete. The panels were installed in 1895 under the orders of John Dobson when he was designing the first-class lounge. Named Burmantoft tiles, they were manufactured in Leeds. They were hand-made and costly, and experts today claim they are the only tiles of their kind to be still on public display. You can see them for yourself at The Centurion, a bar at Newcastle Station, on the site of the old first-class lounge.
The station is on Neville Street, near the banks of the River Tyne, near the city centre.
The station has helpful amenities and services for its passengers, too:

- Self-service ticket machines and accessible ticket machines. Plus, you can collect tickets you have bought online from the self-service machines.
