Cardiff Central Train Station

Cardiff Central is one of the two main railway stations in Cardiff, the other being Cardiff Queen Street. It’s Wales's busiest and largest railway station, which was originally built in the 1840s. Yet, the station owes its continued existence to 19th-century Britain’s engineer extraordinaire, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who diverted the River Taff to the west and made a larger and safer site for the station.

Cardiff Central is housed in a Grade II-listed building and sports a magnificent Art Deco façade emblazoned with ‘Great Western Railway’ above the station’s main entrance. Today, the station conveniently opens on Central Square in front of the main entrance, which was recently redeveloped and allows passengers direct access to Cardiff City Centre immediately.

Cardiff Central has a range of amenities, including:

  • A ticket office (opening times: Monday to Saturday: 5.40am – 10.30pm; Sunday: 7.30am – 10.30pm). You can book train tickets as well as monthly and annual season tickets at the ticket office.
  • Self-service ticket machines and accessible ticket machines. Plus, you can collect tickets you have bought online from the self-service machines.

  • Step-free access to all platforms.
  • Boards to check the real-time train timetable.
  • ATMs, shops, and hospitality.
